Mike Evans, paranormal detective, ghost hunter, exorcist, chain smoker, dead beat and former second in command of one of the most powerful esoteric societies in the world is having a bad go of things as of late.

Aside form the fact that he hasn't aged a day since 1988, hasn't had a meaningful relationship in almost as long, lives out of his office next to a sex shop, all the crippling poverty and has been on the run for over a year from his old mentor, he's also almost out of smokes.

But everything changes when a too good to be true client drops a missing persons case and a deposit check for fifty grand in his lap.

Against his better judgment he takes the case and the reader along for a danger filled journey through the seedy, magickal underbelly of Cleveland, Ohio. A journey that reveals a plot that could change the world and ultimately the one thing that Mike fears the most his destiny.

Bastard Like Me is a thrilling ride. A hard boiled, noir laced, paranormal thriller with equal parts humor, insight and danger.

Bastard Like Me A Mike Evans Novel eBook Eric Pollarine John Lemut

I am amazed that nobody has written a review of this book yet. Granted it's only been out for five days and it's 206 pages long, but I read the whole thing in three days.

The basic story covers Mike Evans and the really bad week he's having. He's a chain smoking, coffee guzzling, private investigator of magickal messes and more. And what with killing demons and being chased by his former boss and some magickal assassins and other nasty creatures, he's having a tough time making it through his day. Until he gets a job trying to find a missing girl. One who is a little more than special. That's when things start to get weird.

This book takes place in Cleveland but in a Cleveland where magick is real and spells and demons are more prevalent than the general public is aware. The writing is fantastic, the imagery is phenomenal, the editing is almost perfect (sorry John but there are still a few mistakes), and the story is riveting and entertaining while being dark and twisty. Granted you may make mental reference to the movie Constantine but that should in no way inhibit you from downloading this book.

I would rank this as one of the top ten best books I've downloaded this year. I hope the author writes more stories about Mike Evans because I'm ready to read another one. And how can you knock a two hundred page book for two bucks? Although if I could get an explanation of why Mike smokes so much and drinks so much coffee, that would be appreciated.

Bastard Like Me A Mike Evans Novel eBook Eric Pollarine John Lemut Reviews

This was great read.
Makes you smell the air pollution and feel the grit.
Rough language at times, so not for the squeamish...
or those trying to stop smoking.
Waiting for a sequel
Wall to wall action. I couldn't put it down, ended up getting only 3 hours sleep before I had to go to work! And every missed second of sleep was worth it!
Loved this story! Fun, fast-paced and keeps you guessing. Well worth the $1.99! Hope this author continued the saga of Mike Evans )
This "bastard" was part of a large magical organization and he was destined for leadership. Then he jumped ship and laid low took poorly paid jobs to make ends meet and hung out in low rent areas unlikely to be populated by the organization and their interested parties. This worked for a while, but Bastard Like Me is all about when the low key lifestyle stopped working. It's got good action if you like supernatural mysteries and thrillers. It is a good, quick read.
Not your typical hero -- no good hearted man that wins the girl in the end, or a teen thrown into an academy because of his potential powers, or a misfit wizard. Mike Evans is a man with a sordid past, trying to make ends meet as the type of a private investigator more likely to banish ghosts than to track wandering husbands. The opening scene has him banishing a ghost from a home for a pittance, barely enough for half a carton of cigarettes and a cup or two of coffee.
A better title might have been "The quest for cigarettes", as Mike's the type to put chain smokers to shame...

As the story unfolds, we learn more of Mike's Cleveland along with Mike's back story, a story which plays a major role in the plot and "end-game". An enjoyable read from a somewhat different perspective than we normally see in Fantasy. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Mike Evans...
The ability to find awesome books from self-published authors is what e-reading is all about! It seems like I go through about 10 "meh" self-published books to find a great one like this but it's worth the effort. The story is action-packed(cliché, but true) with the author's own take on magic that I really enjoyed. The editing is "professional" grade and NOT full of grammatical errors that plague many self-published titles. There was the minor(previously mentioned) error of a Glock having a safety but it didn't detract from the story and probably wouldn't be noticed other than by gun owners like myself. If you like action, magic and gruff humor, do yourself a favor and drop $1.99 on this(it's worth the cost of a major published title, in my opinion). The author has another book out(One Fine Day) and I'm going straight to that title now that I've finished this.
